The word "media" is used to refer to a variety of communication channels, including radio, television, newspapers, the internet, social media, and various niche blogs. The dissemination of information and knowledge is the primary goal of the media. The best communication tool for a large audience is media. The mass communication approach is successfully carried out with the aid of many media, including electronic media, print media, and social media.

The media is recognised as the fourth pillar of our democracy because it examines government decisions and policies and assesses how well programmes are being implemented. One of the media's key functions is to highlight the concerns and difficulties that the public faces in order to enable their full participation in democracy. 

Media has proven to be a mirror for numerous regimes over the years. Media exposure of scams and problems led to numerous governments losing their power. Indian politics have experienced many ups and downs throughout the years, and the media has managed to analyse it critically. Even during the gloomy times of the emergency, the media maintained its right to free speech and attacked the thenruler blatantly.

The fourth pillar of democracy has been eroding over time steadily and slowly, and recently its rate has accelerated. Governments all over the world are aware of the power of information; in order to manage it, they must have influence over media organisations.

Governments utilise the media as a tool to manipulate the populace by promoting their preferred agenda and preventing the public from learning the truth. The media fabricates unneeded problems, makes them the focus of day and night debates, and hides the true problems. Even the chief justice of India remarked in a case that debates on TV are creating more pollution than anybody. There are allegations on media of paid news, particularly during election seasons.

For many years, the United States has been a stronghold of capitalism. Corporations have significant influence over the US government, and the connection between the two is public knowledge. Five corporate houses dominate 90% of US media, making politics, business, and media a trifecta. In exchange for the government looking after the corporate houses' goal, corporate houses ensure through the media that the majority of information provided is favourable to the popularity of the government.

In India, similar patterns have already begun. Earlier, the state broadcaster would provide news that favoured the government; today, the majority of media outlets are advancing the government's goal without closely examining it. Due to media outlets being owned by corporations, this is now conceivable. Similar to the US, businesses are likewise gaining control over Indian media. In an effort to influence and support the government, billionaires are showing a keen interest in media companies. Very few media outlets that have a reputation for scrutinizing the government are on the verge of losing their ownership to big corporations.

Some journalists who are renowned for bringing the truth to the public's attention have abandoned traditional media in favour of social media platforms. In addition to journalists, people from other professions are creating explicit content with the intention of exposing reality to society. Whistleblowers and investigative journalists have shattered governments' silence via social media because it gives them the freedom and space to speak themselves entirely without being constrained by editors, owners, TRP, etc. The truth will emerge regardless of how much governmental entities and corporations try to stop it.

Kashmir as a crisis has fallen off our headlines and from the top of our collective minds. Which is precisely the most important change for the better.

This is the third anniversary of the big constitutional changes in the status of Jammu and Kashmir. At the usual journalism schools, among the first things you are taught is the rule of three, or the three-example rule. Which means once you have three pointers in the same direction, your story is established. We are, therefore, looking at three things that have changed for the better since 5 August 2019, three that should’ve happened but haven’t, and three that have got worse.

But why are you going on and on about Kashmir? Who’s even thinking about it anymore, many of you might ask me. Which is precisely the most important change for the better.

If Kashmir has receded in our minds, and the third anniversary of the changes did not even feature on our media headlines or prime time discussions, nor trend on Twitter even for an hour, it means that dramatic — and audacious — move achieved something substantive.

Think about it calmly. For the past 75 years, barring one sizeable interregnum of relative calm between 1972 and 1987, Jammu and Kashmir has only featured on top of our minds and in our headlines as a chronic crisis.

The “our” used here is for public opinion all across India, and especially in Jammu and Kashmir. If it was seen as a perennially troubled zone in the rest of the country, those living in the state were direct victims.

That Kashmir as a crisis has fallen off our minds is the first big, positive change. The ever-looming cloud of Kashmir as a crisis weighed heavily on our politics as an easy connection was made between the Valley, terrorism, separatism, Islam and Pakistan.

It helped one side on our political wrestling mat define the national interest in a particular way. The founder of the Jana Sangh, Syama Prasad Mookerjee, died in Kashmir, mysteriously for his followers, and thereby an eternal martyr for the cause. That is why decades later, in trying to get ahead in the leadership tussle in the BJP, Murli Manohar Joshi led that march in December 1991-January 1992 to unfurl the tricolour in Srinagar. It is besides the point that the face in that historic picture that grew the most in stature from that outing was one young, relatively unknown functionary then, Narendra Modi.

 Armed insurrection in Kashmir, with an undeniable Pakistani connection, was built into our pan-national psyche from 1989 on and filtered down into popular culture. It sparked the flurry of the ‘Sunny Deol genre’ in Bollywood where, for the first time, the Muslim was mostly a bad guy, terrorist, and often a Pakistani stooge.

Now, that genre has faded.

Next, barring China and Turkey, almost no other nation of any consequence has even spoken about the Kashmir “issue” in the past three years.

All the Gulf countries, and the Islamic world elsewhere, seem relieved that this doesn’t seem an issue any more. The OIC statements no longer count. Besides other reasons, also because it not only keeps totally silent on the Uyghurs, but also invites the Chinese foreign minister as the most prominent guest at its summit.

And third, Pakistan. Imran Khan made the campaign of his life, but lost out as nobody paid him any attention. He ratcheted up tensions with India, stopped trade, let his economy slide, and today the nation with more nukes than India is praying for an FATF reprieve in the morning and an IMF bailout at night.

That the truce on the Line of Control came about, and has held, tells us that story. There will always be the odd terror attack, but Pakistan, at this point, counts for nothing on the Kashmir issue.

 An important upshot of this wide global acceptance of the fait accompli is that the negotiating equation between India and Pakistan has shifted. The Pakistani establishment always believed they would get something by way of a gain if they could force India into negotiations. It was with this hope that they launched every operation, covert or overt, in the past decades. This is now over. No Indian Parliament would ever reverse what’s been done.

  Critics say it's a bad strategy to not cover election-bound Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh in the yatra. Congress argues it wants to consolidate the existing voter base.

The Congress began its Kanyakumari to Kashmir ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ on 7 September with over 100 yatris, including former party president Rahul Gandhi, setting off on the ostensible long nationwide march.

The yatra — the largest mass outreach programme of its kind by the Congress in recent times — comes at a time when the party faces a slew of questions that need urgent, difficult answers. Answers that may decide its future over the next few years, especially in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

And that is why, Bharat Jodo Yatra is ThePrint’s Newsmaker of the Week.

What are these critical questions that the Congress needs to answer? Let’s take a look. 

 The Rahul Gandhi conundrum  

Taking questions from the press on Friday, Rahul Gandhi made it “very clear” that he was “not leading” the padyatra. He also refused to answer whether he will be a candidate in the Congress’ presidential election, nominations for which start later this month.

“You like to focus on me and that’s a different issue. I’m not leading this padyatra. I’m participating in this padyatra,” Gandhi told reporters.

To another question, he said: “Whether I become president or don’t become president, this will become very clear when the presidential election takes place in the Congress party.”

He, however, said that he has “very clearly decided” what he is going to do.

This begs several questions.

First, if Rahul Gandhi is participating in the yatra simply as a party MP, why has the party’s communication team inundated the phones of journalists with pictures of only him since the yatra began? Where are the Congress’ other parliamentarians?

Second, if Gandhi isn’t putting himself up as a choice for the post of party president, shouldn’t the Congress spend its resources on establishing the new leader? Otherwise, as a G-23 leader remarked privately, it’ll be a “branding exercise” for a “bombed brand”.

Third, if this is indeed Rahul’s “re-launch”, then the Congress should spell it out, considering many critics, including the party’s dissident G-23 group, have pointed out the need for a strong and visible leadership.Gandhi, however, said that for him, this will be as much a “personal journey” as a political one.“I agreed to join this yatra partially because I believe in the ideals of the Congress party and I think that it’s important that those ideals are spread in the country. And partially because I thought this would be a very good experience for me personally.

I think it’s a powerful thing to do, not just from the political standpoint but from a personal standpoint. And I thought it would be worthwhile to do that from a personal journey perspective…Hopefully I will get some understanding about myself and some understanding about this beautiful country from this yatra. And I think two-three-four months later, I will be a little wiser,” Gandhi said.

 Who is the yatra for? 

Even before the yatra commenced, there were many rumblings in the party about “civil society members” participating in it, including activists such as Yogendra Yadav.Many Congress workers are disgruntled with Yadav, once an aggressive critic of the party, and were against allowing him to play such a prominent role in the yatra.As per sources, it is Yadav and others who are acting as the intermediaries between the Congress yatra participants and the civil society in the places that the yatra is passing through.The Congress will have to bear in mind two things in such a scenario. First, that the people it reaches out to may not all be Congress voters or turn into one after this outreach. Second, the party workers must not feel alienated by Rahul and his ‘coterie’, which, for the purposes of the Yatra, includes Yadav and co. 

The yatra and 2024

The most asked question — in both party circles and outside — is whether the yatra will cause incremental gains for the Congress in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Will this long march cause a dent in Narendra Modi and the BJP’s armour?The yatra looks to cover 60 Lok Sabha constituencies. While the response to the yatra is expected to be great in the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala (24 of its 53 MPs in Lok Sabha presently are from these three states), the party’s real test will start as it moves northwards.

It is in the North Indian states that the party needs to win back its electorate. While the yatra will spend a considerable number of days in Madhya Pradesh, Punjab (where it is the principal opposition), and Rajasthan (where it is in power), it will spend very little time in states like Uttar Pradesh where it is a marginal force. It is also be giving states like Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh — where elections are slated for later this year — a miss.While critics say this is a bad strategy, the strategists within the Congress say that they’re trying to consolidate their existing voter base.How will that play out? Well, as Gandhi says, we’ll all be a little wiser after 150 days.

Observing certain modern innovations makes us wonder whether they were created to aid us or to entrap us in a society where we are unable to exist without their approval. In the straightforward example of banking, where customers deposit money, transactions now require both a mobile phone and an internet connection.
