New Delhi, 18 October (HS): The Central Government has opposed the petition in the Supreme Court seeking a Uniform Civil Code. The union Law Ministry in an affidavit filed in the Supreme Court said that the petition should be dismissed with fine, as the PIL for Uniform Civil Code is not maintainable.
BJP leader and lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay has filed a petition demanding the implementation of Uniform Civil Code in the country. The petition stated that keeping in view the spirit of Articles 14, 15 and 44 of the Constitution, guidelines should be given for the implementation of uniform code of conduct on all the people of the country. The That uniform code of conduct is necessary for the unity, integrity and brotherhood of the country. It said that guidelines should be issued to make a uniform code of conduct for all citizens of the country by combining good traditions of all religions and communities.
The Common Civil Code is in force in Goa since 1965. This code is applicable to every citizen of Goa and it is the only state to have a uniform law.
